Recovering From A Swamped Native Ultimate

After recently purchasing a Native Ultimate and with a couple of posts of late with regards to swamping said kayak, I decided it be best if I try a recovery of my own.

First off, this test was a best case scenario in a controlled environment.  Calm pool, no waves, no wind, no extra fishing gear weighing the yak down.  The gentlemen in the pictures lent no physical assistance, he just made sure the kayak wasn’t going to puncture the pool liner.

I was recently talking to Santa Cruz founder Jim Martin, who wears all hats at Santa Cruz from designer to fabricator to PR man.  He sent over these early pics of his newest creation.  This as-of-yet unnamed beast came to me with an early list of features including a built-in live bait tank with pump (tank doubles as storage area).  There is also a center storage box and accessible bow hatch.   Jim also designed the bow to be a bit wider thus increasing the bouyancy level of the kayak.

Panama City Beach, Florida, Kayak Fishing

Fishing Panama City Beach, Florida

The bell rang at 3:25 to signify the end of another school week and the beginning of March Break.  I was out the door quicker than the kids and into my van which was already fully loaded for our trip to Panama City Beach, Florida. A quick stop at home to connect the trailer that housed the 2 kayaks we were taking with us and then to pick up my two cohorts that were making the trip along with me.
